Sunday Celebrations

One Sunday in our silent Quaker Meeting for Worship I felt restless and impatient, looking for a place to settle my mind. Simply “listening” wasn’t enough. So I decided to look at each person in the room, one at a time, and think of all the reasons I loved her or him.

Later, I found out that what I had done is a time-honored Quaker meditation exercise. And how easy it is to do!

But then, not too long ago, I tried the exercise in Walmart and found that outside the circle of my beloved friends… it’s not always so easy after all. At the same time, I had the epiphany that loving every single person, even the hard ones, especially the hard ones, is absolutely the most important thing I can do. I need to do it if I’m going to help heal our broken world.

Sunday Celebrations are part of my mission to love every single person in this beautiful, messed-up, incredible world.¬†Each week, I’ll feature someone different and tell the world why I love that person. Sometimes I’ll celebrate someone easy–a child or a friend, for instance–and sometimes I’ll choose someone harder–a rude stranger in the grocery store, or someone who hurt my feelings or did something awful to someone I care about. Maybe I’ll be brave and even try to love the pedophiles and the terrorists sometimes.

And sometimes I’ll forget and I won’t celebrate anyone that week.

But usually you’ll find me here on Sunday, worshiping in my own quiet way, learning to fulfill that greatest of commandments: Love.

Welcome to Sunday Celebrations.
